6a. Intermediate Ballet Syllabus - Barre Work


Black = English
Rood = Nederlands

For ages 11 and older - the 4th and 5th years of formal ballet training.

Warm ups
stride sit position -
stretch over one leg at a time with R and L arm,
stretch both arms over leg, hold ankles and bend fwd,
lie on back, lift one leg straight and pull toward body

Barre Work

1. Stretch with port de bras
in 1st position bend fwd (head to knees) touch the floor
straighten with 1st port de bras
slide RF to 2nd and stretch with a complete circle of the arm
into the barre and out to the side

2. Stretch for arm and body
2 in 1st position, bend fwd and straighten,
2 in 2nd position, side bend, arm circle,
2 in 4th, bend fwd, bend back, straighten knee,
2 in 5th, bend fwd and stretch up, press up to demi pointe,
bend fwd and stretch up, spring up to 5th

3. Grand Plié
deep knee bend 8x in 2nd, and 4x in 1st

4. Battements tendus
"beat stretch"
slide RF to 2nd and close 5th back and front
with plié 16 times
then 16 times without a demi plié

5. Battement tendu in 5th and 1st
8x in 5th with demi plié,
8x in 5th without plié,
8x in 1st without plié,
4 ankle stretching and 16 tendon stretching

6. Battement degagé
"beat disengage"
5th to 2nd 2x, plié in 2nd and recover,
4x in 5th,
4x in 1st and repeat

7. Battement dégagés in 2 and 3 counts
"beat disengage"
slide foot to 2nd until foot is free from floor
lose 5th back, front
16 times in 3 counts
16 times in 2 counts

8. Rond de jambe à terre
"circle of leg on floor"
Prep: slide RF fwd in 4th and to side in 2nd
ct 1 - slide RF to 1st position
ct 2 - slide RF forward in 4th position
ct 3 - slide RF side to 2nd position
ct 4 - slide RF back to 4th
Repeat on other side

9. Rond de jambe, endehors et endedans à terre
"circle of leg outward and inward"
8x endehors
8x endedans

10. Battements frappés
"beat strike"
bend foot in front of ankle and stretch to strike the floor
3 cts - bend, stretch, hold

. Battement Frappé in 3, 2, and 1 count
"beat strike"
16 in 3cts - out, hold, bend,
16 in 2cts - out, hold, bend,
16 in 1ct - on demi pointe - out, hold, bend

12. Preparation for rond de jambe en l'air
"circle of leg in the air outward and inward"
bend foot back and front of calf and extend to 2nd 8x,
bend foot front and back of calf and extend to 2nd 8x

13. Grand battement - devant et derrièrre
"large beat front and back"
in 4ct. 2x
in 2cts 4x
3x fwd and 3x back

14. Grand ronds de jambe a tèrre endehors & endedans
"large circle of leg on floor"
from 5th front slide 5th back - endehors
from 5th back slide 5th front - endedans
demi plié in 1 endehors - repeat all reversed

15. Battements retiré
"beat withdraw (thigh lift)"
8 in 5th position closing back front
lift leg lightly in hip up quickly
& control lowering
press foot to floor

16. Pirouette preparation
"turn on one foot"
4 preparations - drop back in 4th, press up & hold
4 half-turns - drop back in 4th, press up & 1/2 turn

17. Pirouette turning
"turn on 1 foot"
4 preparations
4 whole turns
4 one and a half turns
18. Cinq Relevés - adagio
very slowly - "5 rises"
developpé encroix - unfold leg in shape of cross
grand plié and relevé in 5th arms down
developpé a la quatrieme devant with a relevé and lower heel
developpé a la seconde
developpé a la quatrieme derriere
developpé a la seconde
developpé a la quatrieme devant
demi plié, degagé and close in 5th back

19. Deux grand rond de jambe en l'air avec arabesque
"2 large circles of leg inair with arabesque"

lower back heel 1 ct
retiré 2cts - arms fwd
developpé fwd 2cts - arms open
carry leg to 2nd and back in 4th, 4 cts
