Advanced Syllabus - Barre Work

For ages 13 and older, and as a daily lesson plan of selected combinations for
mature male and female ballet dancers.
For the young teen expect 3 years to master the technique.
1. 2 demi and 1 grand plié, rises in 1st position
facing fwd, 2 demi plié in 1st position, grand plié,
rise on demi plié from grand plié - arms overhead and down -
4x R, 4x L
2. Grand Plié with port de Bras
deep plié in 1st position,
port de bras, rise to demi point,
deep plié in 1st position, balance with arms 5th en haut -
repeat in 2nd, 4th, and 5th psitions
3. Grand battement in 2nd position
face barre - point toe in 2nd, rise, lower,
close 5th 4x, lift and close 8x
4. Battement tendu, battement relevé
encroix
slide point fwd in 4th, demi plie in 4th,
press up to pointe, transfer weight back in 4th,
close 5th front,
repeat in 2nd and 4th back
5. Battement tendu with demi plié-encroix
and 1st
stretch foot fwd in 4th, close 5th with a demi plié,
stretch foot side in 2nd, close 5th with a demi plié,
stretch foot back in 4th, close 5th with a demi plié
stretch foot side in 2nd, close 5th with a demi plié,
repeat above set 4 times
stretch to 2nd and close in 1st with a demi plié 16x
6. Battement tendu without plié-encroix and 1st
repeat previous exercise without plié
7. Battement Dégagé encroix,
1st and 4th
brush fwd in 4th, close 5th, brush side in 2nd, close
5th back,
brush back in 4th, close 5th, brush side in 2nd, close 5th front,
repeat set 4x
16x in 1st position, and 16x in 4th position fwd and
back
8. Battement dégagé encroix
in 3, 2, and 1 count
brush fwd and close 5th front,
brush side and close in 5th back,
brush back and close 5th back,
brush side and close 5th front,

9. Battement frappé single and double
16 single back and front and out to 2nd,
16 double back and front and out to 2nd,
finish front on ankle on demi pointe and balance
10. Battement frappé, single and on demi pointe and
balance
preparation: foot to ankle
stretch to side and bend in back of ankle,
stretch to side and bend in front of ankle in 16 cts,
repeat on demi pointe, and balance on knee
11. Battement frappé, double and on demi pointe and
balance
preparation: foot in ankle
beat back, front & extend to 2nd,
beat front, back & extend to 2nd 16x,
repeat on demi pointe and balance in attitude,
retiré and developpé into
attitude
12. Rond de jambe à terre, endehors et endedans
preparation: slide foot fwd and to 2nd -
8x ronde de jambe à terre
outwards

inward
ending - circle R leg back to 4th, plié on L supporting leg, lean head to barre,
circle R leg fwd to 4th, plié on L supporting leg,
lean head out,
close 5th front and turn into barre on demi pointe arms down,
finish facing opposite direction, spring down and open arm to side
13. Ronde de jambe à terre
preparation: small developpé fwd
and side -
8 rond de jambe endehors, 4 slowly raised,
8 rond de jambe endedans, 4 slowly raised,
soutenou - circle R leg back in 4th, to side in 2nd,
fwd, low to floor on front foot, in plié, back leg
straight,
bend fwd, touch floor, arm up over head,
rise and relevé up in backbend till both arms meet
overhead,
and then straighten upper back, balance
14. Rond de jambe en l'air endehors
et endedans
preparation: grand battement
2 ronde de jambe en l'air endehors and close 5th back
and brush up to 2nd
2 ronde de jambe en l'air endedans and close 5th
front and brush up to 2nd
15. Grand rond de jambe enláir endehors et endedans
from 5th, brush R leg to 4th, carry to 2nd and 4th back and close 5th back,
brush R leg back in 4th, carry to 2nd and 4th front and close 5th front -
repeat 4x
16. Petit battement sur la cou de pied
preparation: F on ankle, half toe on floor -
from knee, slide toe out to side in small 2nd and into back of ankle
from knee, slide toe out to side in small 2nd and into front of ankle

16x faster and balance on demi pointe

17. Grand battement
3 fwd in 4th and 1 in 2nd, close back in 5th,
3 back in 4th and 1 in 2nd, close front in 5th
18. Balansoir
brush leg from 4th back to 4th front
and from 4th front to 4th back, continuous
19. Attitude exercise
face barre, 2 cts retiré
swing knee across in front 1 ct,
swing knee out to side and back 1 ct,
hold in attitude 2 cts,
extend in arabesque 1 ct - close 1 ct
20. Developpé encroix, flat
and on demi pointe
foot at ankle, knee, developpé fwd
to 4th, lower to pointe, close 5th front,
foot at ankle, knee, developpé to second, lower to
pointe, close 5th back,
foot at ankle, knee, developpé back to 4th, lower to
pointe, close 5th back,
foot at ankle, knee, developpé to second, lower to
pointe, close 5th front
repeat on demi pointe
21. Petit battement sur la cou de pied - with accent
and even, balance on knee
small battement sur la cou de pied around ankle,
accent front beat, then continuous,
repeat with accent on back beat
22. Soutenu turn
step RF to 2nd, cross LF across in 5th turning R,
legs and feet touching
spring down RF front
23. Relevé 5th and entrechat quatre
spring to 5th and spring down
spring up, beat front back, and back front, and close 5th
4x right foot beginning front
4x left foot beginning front
24. Grand battement encroix
lift leg in 5th,
4th front, side 2nd, 4th back
4 sets and repeat to the left
25. Relevé 5th and entrechat quatre
spring to 5th and spring down
spring up, beat front back, and back front, and close 5th

27. Balancoire
brush fwd in 4th, retiré, developpé back in 4th,
repeat with 8 brushes of leg fwd and back in 4th -
reverse,
brush leg back and forth, retiré developpé
front,
repeat 8 back and front with swinging movement
28. Developpé a la quatrieme
devant relevé, et un fouetté
raise RF to knee - arm fwd,
developpé R leg fwd, open
arm,
rise on three quarter pointe keeping leg extended,
turn into barre allowing leg to turn in the hip socket,
finish facing in opposite direction
R hand on barre, L overhead turn L arm to arabesque position,
hold, close 5th back
29. Port de Bras and Attitude
bend fwd and touch floor, straighten, bend back and
straighten,
repeat on demi pointe
face barre on diagonal, retiré 4 counts,
carry knee back to attitude 4 counts, lift arm in attitude 4 ts,
rise on demi pointe 2cts, release barre, extend leg 2cts
30. Demi grand Rond de jambe
en l'air endehors et endedans

on half turn to face back,
step L and kick R leg back -
continuous, later with a jump turn
33. Stretch on Barre
face barre, leg turned out on barre,
weight on side of arch, plié rise on demi pointe,
turn forward, leg turned out on barre,
weight on side of arch, plié rise on demi pointe,
turn to face front of room, leg turned out on barre,
weight on side of arch, plié rise on demi pointe,
turn forward, leg turned out on barre,
weight on side of arch, plié rise on demi pointe,
turn to face barre,leg turned out on barre,
weight on side of arch, plié rise on demi pointe -
lower leg to floor and repeat with other leg on the barre
