Darning Socks and
Sweaters Almost Invisibly
I had a big wicker basket
sitting on the floor at my end of the couch, with eighteen pairs of wool socks
needing darning.
My husband and I seem to wear
through the back of the heels first, and with the cost of replacing them, I was
not about to throw them out.
So I experimented with
darning them, and developed an almost invisible technique, which I'll now
describe:
- Turn the sock inside out.
- Insert a darning egg (a
large smooth egg-shaped block of wood made for darning) under the hole.
- Choose a strong thread such
as for quilting, in a closely matched color.
- To start darning, take a
running stitch all around the circumference of the hole, 2 stitches back from the
edge, keeping the stitches inside each loop of wool so that you don't see the
repair thread.
- With one hand hold the end
of the sewing thread tight, and with the other hand pull the thread to close
the hole.
- Take a few stitches in place to hold the thread tight and
the hole securely closed.
- Run the thread a few
stitches away from hole within the stitches of the garment before clipping.
Now you have no knots to
chafe and your repair is only visible on close inspection. Turn the sock right
side out, and on to the next item!
