Male and Female Japanese Dolls from 1930
on display at the MAS
Museum aan de Stroom,
Antwerp, Belgium
|
|
On May 31, 2011 my husband took these photos of male and female
Japanese dolls on our visit to the newly opened MAS Museum aan
de Stroom in Antwerp, Belgium. The dolls each stand
about thirty three inches (82.5cm) tall.
The next two photos are close ups of the doll heads:
Both dolls were made in 1930 by Gōyō
Hirata (1903-1981) in Japan. The elements included wood, silk, mother-of-pearl,
plaster and pigments. They were donated by the Society for Cultural relations
Japan in 1934. They are Yamato ningyō, or ‘doll in the old Japanese style’, which
represents a young girl in a festive kimono with long sleeves, and a boy in
ceremonial dress. I extend thanks for this information, which was translated
into English from Dutch for me by Chris de Lauwer,
Curator, MAS Museum aan de Stroom,
Antwerp, Belgium. The card with the
display was written in Dutch, but there are free brochures available in
Dutch, English and French that describe the exhibits in general.
If you are traveling to Europe and can, stop by to visit the
MAS in Antwerp, Belgium. It is easily accessible by public transport bus from
the main train station. It is handicapped
accessible. The tall museum building is impressive being built of red Indian sandstone. It also houses a café and a
restaurant, with a bookstore right next door. Closed on
Mondays, as many museums in Europe are. To find out more about the MAS
collections visit www.mas.be for complete
information.
I took the photo below of the MAS during our visit.
