Susan's Ancestors and Family

Let's go back more than a hundred years in American history - we begin with "Uncle Dave," Major David Wheeler Jenkins born in 1875, who was married to Mae Powell Jenkins, "Aunty," sister of Susan's paternal grandmother, "Nanny" Susan Ann Powell Kramer Hay. Nanny and Aunty's family, the Powell's, founded Powellville on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, just southwest of Ocean City, Maryland, where it still stands, today. Aunty and Nanny's father was a farmer and using a schooner, supplied Confederate troops with produce by sailing up the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore, during the Civil War, 1861-1865.

Around 1910 Aunty and Uncle Dave bought and moved to Fair Oaks on the Magothy River, Severna Park, Maryland. An article in the "Baltimore Sun Newspaper" said Fair Oaks was the most northern 'southern plantation'. Here Susan's father lived with Aunty and Uncle Dave from age 6 or 7 after his father was killed hitch hiking on Rt. 5 in California looking for work during the Great Depression.

5. Susan's father Walter Kramer's sisters - Mary Rachel - Mitchie, and Mae. 1944.

6. Wedding of Susan's maternal grandparents about 1923. Back row, 2nd from left is Joseph Melocik, Sr. grandmother's brother. At far right is Francis "Frank" Kaspar, Susan's maternal grandfather. On the front row in bride's gown is Susan's maternal grandmother - Helene Melocik Kaspar. The child is cousin Mary Anne Kaspar.

7. Jane Frances Kaspar - Susan's mother, about 6 years old, Easter 1931, the scene appears to be a park in Baltimore.

8. Jane Kaspar Kramer and Walter Roland Kramer - Susan's parents. About 1944. Walter was enlisted in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War. Stationed in England and the Panama Canal. Served as a radio engineer and lifeguard on ship.

9. Susan Helene Kramer, born December 30, 1946. This photo is from August 1947.

10. Jane Kramer in her mid-thirties - about 1960.
