Introduction:
-
The entire jumper is sewn by hand using single strand quilting thread. This is
the couture method of sewing that I use with child and doll patterns. This
method takes longer, but lasts forever and allows for more intricacy in nudging
around corners, for example.
-
The bodice is lined.
-
The finished waist is 25 inches to be roomy enough to wear over a couple of
winter shirts. The waist tightness adjusts with the ties. Use a square knot to
secure in center back - (right over left and under, left over right and under).
-
Study the photos carefully for each step of sewing.
-
Use fabric that will stand up to child's play. In this jumper I have recycled
the denim from one of my denim dresses.
Items
needed:
-
Denim sections including skirt, ties, and bodice inserts: 1 yard of 45-50 inch
wide fabric.
-
Paisley material for bodice inserts and lining: one half yard.
-
Quilting thread and needle for hand sewing.
-
Embroidery yarn for decorative stitching on waist seam.
Pattern Pieces:
The pattern is traced onto 1 inch (2.5cm) squares of graph paper. Copy the
pattern onto the graph paper and cut out.
Pattern piece
includes 1/2 inch seam allowance unless noted differently.
The pattern is my copyright but you may use it for personal
use and gifts, but not commercially.
Alternately,
the full size bodice pieces with detailed instructions are sold here as a PDF ebook:

Lining -
Skirt -
Cut a rectangle 50 inches wide by
17.5 inches long to produce a jumper that is 23 inches from top of shoulder
seam to finished lower edge. If your material comes 45 inches wide, go with
that instead of 50 inches.
2 Ties -
Cut 2 strips, each 2.5 inches wide
by 15 inches long. To sew, fold in half lengthwise and sew one quarter inch
seam on long edge. Leave one short end free for turning. I use the eraser end
of a pencil to turn the ties. Sew on side of front bodice piece - see position
in photo below.

Follow the photos below to sew and assemble:
Sew triangle between 2 side pieces
on front. Repeat for back. Press seam to sides -
Finished view on good side - Sew
front to lining, inside neck and armholes with good sides together. Sew back to
lining, inside neck and armholes with good sides together. Leave lower edge,
sides, and shoulder seams free until you turn right side out. Then blind stitch
shoulder seam and side seam together. Leave lower edge free to attach to skirt

-
Take your skirt and gather in two lines
along top edge. (See photo below.) This makes a nice neat set of the tiniest
gathers. Sew bodice to skirt between the lines. Then remove the lower line of
gathers. Position your skirt seam in line with a side seam. Turn lower edge up
one inch twice and blind stitch -
Last photo is running stitch with 2
colors of embroidery thread positioned over bodice and skirt seam -
