Try this sequence with students to practice some basic math: addition, subtraction, halves, quarters, sets.

Preparation: Space to move across the room, along the side or diagonally.

Ages: 5+

Method:

A. Gallop across the floor individually as a set of 1.

B. Gallop with a partner as a set of 2. (1+1=2).

C. 2 sets of partners gallop holding hands to make a set of 4. (2+2=4).

D. Two sets of 4 join together to make a set of 8. (4+4=8).

Reverse the process:

E. The set of 8 breaks into 2 sets of 4. (8-4=4).

F. The sets of 4 break into 2 sets of 2. (4-4=2).

G. The set of 2 breaks in half to make 1. (2-1=1).
