Love Soup by Anna Thomas - Cookbook Review

Susan Helene Kramer

Anna Thomas is an Ojai, California author. I have all her cookbooks to date including The Vegetarian Epicure, The Vegetarian Epicure II, and now Love Soup. I consider myself fortunate to have bought them as they came out beginning with the first one in 1975.

The story was, in 1975 I joined a meat boycott that was at the time to last 2 weeks, so I went to my local library and checked out The Vegetarian Epicure. I loved the recipes so much that my cousin bought me a copy for Christmas. Then as the next two were published I bought them for myself. When Love Soup came out I really liked the recipes and ideas and ending up buying copies for my four adult daughters, too.

Love Soup is divided into seventeen chapters with160 vegetarian recipes, including may vegan recipes – denoted to easily stand out in the contents with a bold letter V next to their listing.

Ms. Thomas has arranged the soups in groups by seasons of the year and a section for holidays. There are hearty soups and cold soups. Then come chapters of breads, hummus and company, salads, and sweets, to finish off the meals.

I like the fact that all her recipes are easy to follow, both in the style she writes and the font used in the book. I can lay the cookbook open on my kitchen table and standing next to it I can see the type easily. Two colors of font are used in the recipes, black for the ingredients and rusty red to set off special notes. So your eye is drawn to the red upon first reading the recipe, which is good, because you get an overview of what’s involved.

If I had to change one item it would be to spread my crusty bread with real butter instead of olive oil, which doesn’t sit well in my digestive system - but that might be a personal anomaly.

I love this cookbook and the whole series, for that matter, and I think you will find some special favorites for yourself.

Highest recommendation.
